About Me

Hi, I'm Russ, and I'm a UX Designer focused on crafting intuitive, high-impact digital products. I have 15 years of experience coding, designing, and delivering apps across all platforms. This has been in demanding fields like games and realtime interactive content.

I've been fortunate to work on a diverse range of projects. My experience at great places like Aardman Animations and Rescape Innovation means I've had to get solutions working across web, native apps, bespoke installations (yes, even for World Heritage Sites!), VR, and live-broadcast TV. This expertise has led to me being trusted with world-renowned and recognised IP. Whether it’s designing for Wallace & Gromit or Teletubbies, or building for England Rugby, I ensure the design fits the platform.

My education from the UX Design Institute gives me the framework, but my technical history gives me the confidence. I don't just dream up experiences; I guarantee solutions that are brilliantly feasible and functionally sound.

My approach to every project is defined by my core values: understanding, collaboration, and accessibility. My goals is to ensure user needs and technical reality are always perfectly aligned, which is the only way to guarantee a successful product delivery.

And because I embrace all things creative - from music and books to art and architecture - I'm energised by being in creative environments. This broad passion fuels the thoughtful, unique solutions I bring to every design challenge.

When a user can only interact through moving their body, how do you make them feel connected to the experience?

Clients

Technologies & tools

The technology we design for, and the tools we use to build, are constantly evolving.

I maintain a steady, dependable toolset that is proven and widely understood in the industry.

Alongside these core platforms, my life long interest in technology keeps me constantly experimenting with new tools. This allows me to understand how emerging technologies might influence the future of design and refine my process.

My Process

As a UX Designer and Product Architect, my process is a strategic blend of user empathy and technical certainty. I focus on creating brilliant, buildable solutions by grounding my approach in professional, adaptable frameworks.

Design Strategy

I apply established frameworks like Double Diamond, Lean UX, or Agile/Scrum, but no two projects are alike. Through experience, I've learned to identify and apply the right process and solutions for the unique challenge at hand.

Workflow Tools

I maintain organised, transparent workflows using tools like Jira, Trello, and Asana. I ensure the design process is always trackable and perfectly synchronized with the overall development timeline and backlog. This ensures the entire team stays connected and on track.

Design Feasibility

My Product Architect background prioritises buildability. I leverage technical insight and iterative testing to ensure designs are technically sound, robust, and deliver value without introducing unnecessary implementation complexity.

Team Communication

I act as a connector, clearly communicating complex ideas to diverse audiences - developers, stakeholders and business leaders. This open conversation ensures a shared understanding, successful design integration, and ultimately, a better product.

While the specific tools, team size, and methodologies I use are adaptable, my approach is always governed by three non-negotiable core values. These principles drive the way I design, think, and interact—regardless of budget, technological constraints, or project scope.

Problem
Feasibility
Solution

Projects are a collection of unique, complex features. My first step is always correctly understanding the core problem before diving into solutions.

My standard approach is driven by established design patterns and built on a foundation of research and analysis. I define solutions by moving from lo-fi wireframes and prototypes to hi-fi designs, validating them through iterative testing.

Crucially, my 15 year technical background ensures this process is grounded in reality. I define realistic technical deliverables immediately, guaranteeing the chosen path is feasible and robust. As an experienced architect, I'm comfortable identifying the best approach for any project, making sure the priorities of the user, stakeholders and product are met, even when constraints like time or budget conspire against us.

Core value:
solving the right problem, realistically

Team
Communicate
Build

I champion designing and building as a true team. Collaboration extends across the entire project environment, requiring clear communication with developers, business leaders, and diverse stakeholders.

I focus on showcasing and communicating ideas effectively, facilitating honest dialogue. The ability to listen to feedback and integrate it without taking it personally is central to my process, ensuring the final design is a successful result of shared insight, not just individual effort.

Core value:
expertise is everywhere.

Accessibility is not an afterthought

Good design is fair design. This principle drives me to integrate WCAG 2.1 guidelines from the earliest stage, making accessibility a core feature, not an afterthought.

This commitment ensures every product is usable by all, regardless of context or ability. My technical insight supports this by helping teams simplify features and ease the development load, which guarantees our commitment to fair design is always implemented reliably and successfully.

Core value:
design backed by fair standards.
